A Monarch Butterfly or simply called a Monarch, is a only one type of milkweed butterfly in the Nymphalidae family. The Monarch Butterfly has orange wings, which is a big part of protection, because when other animals see the dangerous orange, they know to stay away for this is a sign of poison.

A beautiful monarch butterfly will approach a nearby swan plant and lay an egg on one of the leaves. In approximately 5 to 10 days to hatch into a monarch caterpillar. As soon as the egg hatches into a caterpillar it will start eating the leaves of the swan plant until it is big enough to form a chrysalis. When the caterpillar is ready to become a chrysalis it will climb one of the branches of the swan plant and hang off the branch upside down. Then the caterpillar will start to cocoon itself, after ten to fourteen days the cocoon will start to break. Emerging from the chrysalis will be a beautiful butterfly. The young butterfly will not be able to fly yet because their wings are wet from the chrysalis,so they will dry their wings in the sun. Most monarch butterflies will take a big journey to Mexico, but it depends on we're they live. If they do go on the journey to Mexico then they will lay their eggs they're and the new batch of monarch butterflies will make the journey back home, if the monarch butterfly's do not make the journey then it is still a similar process. This is how the monarch life cycle goes.

Published introduction
Over 150 million years ago, along with the dinosaurs, there lived a species of sea turtles.  They have managed to survive longer than many other animals from the Jurassic period.  However, only 10% of sea turtles live to breeding age.  Now that humans have come along, only 1% of all sea turtles survive to breed the new generation of baby sea turtles.

Eggs
Published eggs
The mother sea turtle digs a nesting pit high on the beach and the eggs get carefully placed into the pit by the mother. The eggs are leathery and about the size of ping pong balls. The mother lays about 50-200 eggs. 20% will not hatch. The mother sea turtle lays about 1000 eggs a year.Sea turtles lay over 68,040kgs of eggs in the sand.

Growing up
Published Growing up
Once the eggs are laid and have hatched, they are about the size of a hand. They then have to squirm
desperately towards the surf but along the way there are many dangers such as crabs, birds, rubbish and holes.
By this point 50% have not survived.
In the first few days of life, they will swim underneath a patch of floating seaweed.

Adults
Published Adults
2 sea turtles survive to breeding age without human interference. It takes 2 decades for them to be able to breed. Through the passage of years they become the size of a dinner table. The width that they are when they are adults, they don’t have to worry about getting eaten so much.

Danger in the sea
Published Dangers in the sea
When they are small, their predators will most likely to be fish , dolphins , sharks and seabirds when they come up to breathe. They will also experience challenging weather and rough unfortunate sea currents. When they are adults the predators are bigger, like, sharks as in, great whites and bull sharks. Not likely to happen, but they might get eaten by a killer whale.

Blurb
The sea turtles have been around since the late jurassic, roughly 150 000 000 million years ago and they have an extremely hard life. A sea turtle breed named the archelon is already extinct
1000 eggs a year,
800 hatch,
400 make it to the water,
200 progress toward adulthood,
20 survive to breeding age without human interference,
2 survive to breeding age with human interference.

Glossary
  • survive - continue to live or exist while in spite of danger of hardship
  • squirm - wiggle or twist from side to side
  • desperately - in a way that shows despair

A few weeks ago, all the year 5’s and 6’s went to the zoo, and studied two animals each, one a mammal and one of any other kind. I was as excited as a bumble bee who had just learnt how to fly! But I eventually settled on two animals, the Asian Elephant And the Silver-eye (a bird that's native to New Zealand and Australia, and is sometimes called the White-eye.) Before we went to

the zoo Miss McNae gave us two forms each, one for each animal that we were studying. First

we had to search the internet, and find some basic information about our chosen animals, then

we had to fill it onto the form, but still leave some space for new information we could find at the

zoo. The day we went to The zoo was as wet and damp as when an Elephant who had just had

a twenty hour long bath, in a giant Goldfish bowl! First we headed to the first Red Panda

enclosure, with two cute Red Pandas! Then we went to the NZCM building, where the gave

surgery and helped the animals who needed it to survive. It was warm and dry in there, so we

stayed there and ate morning tea. After we had finished eating, we watched as a lady a reptile

( I don’t remember the name of the creatures species ) a bath before he was to have scary

surgery! Everyone was watching intensely as she poured the water all over the adorable

creature, who was lifting up his head, just waiting for the water to hit him, and wet him even more

than he already was! And he was definitely drenched. Then we went back outside to where the rain

had calmed down. A little. Anyway we went back to looking at the animals, starting with the birds

including the kiwi and the Hyacinth Macaw. My favorite animal that we saw was definetly the Zebras,

they are my favorite animal after all. But I also liked some of the other animals that we saw, like the

Giraffe, the Seals, the Elephants, the Tiger and the Lions. We also saw lot’s of other animals, which I

all found interesting, but  in lots of different ways. Then we went back to the NZCM building to eat

lunch, and keep out of the rain, which was pouring down again. soon it was nearly time to meet up

with all the other groups, so we set off. Although it had been raining, I had still had a great time at the

zoo.

Tessellations

What is Tessellation?

Well.. Tessellation is a when you use one two or three things to make a pattern.

This is my first Tessellation

I made this one by using purple, green, and blue flowers, and making bigger flower shapes. There is only three bigger flowers in this Tessellation, but I bet that if you had a lot more, this Tessellation would look even more beautiful than it already is.

This second Tessellation, is my personal favourite. I used four different coloured houses, some the right  up, and some upside down. First I made a row of normal houses, then I carefully put a row of upside down houses on top, care full not to let there be too much of a gap in between the roofs. After a while, I had a tessellation!

This is my third and final Tesselation. The flowers are put side by side, and the stalks are used to fill all gaps in between.

swimming

All the year fives have had four swimming lessons at milenium now, and i've really enjoyed it so far.

Our first lesson was all about finding where we were at, and Identifying which group we were in, I

got into group two. Each group had a different instructor, and mine was a girl, also in my group was

Ashleigh, Josia, Sammantha, Jasleem and Munopa. Next class we were told to line up in front of our

lane, and when your instuctor called your name, you would jump into the pool and wait for

instructions. The lesson was just practicing and practicing, and so was the lesson today. Thats a little

about everything thats happened at swimming so far.

One sunny Friday afternoon, I was still at school with my little sister, Rochelle and we were on the top court, happily playing with my purple netball. While I was getting ready to shoot I could see the fluffy white clouds, I could smell the rich aroma of soil wafting through the air, I could hear the whispering wind as it passed by. I could feel the warm sunshine, keeping me boiling hot. I was about shoot the ball when my sister started shouting encouragingly. I was ready to shoot.

What if your birthday every day?

What if it was your birthday everyday?

What if it was your birthday everyday? how cool would that would that be! have parties all the time, no time for school and you could get presents everyday! every 365 days instead of being one year older you would be 365 years older! { you would grow tremendously old! } Having a birthday everyday it would be good in some ways but..... well ..... OK it would also be bad in a large amount of ways! for example.... having a birthday every day means that you would not have any other days to look forward to celebrating! For example { Easter, Halloween, Christmas and boxing day!} Also because than you would have to spend lot's of money on the parties!

if animals could talk!

If animals could talk!

by Charlotte Dobbs

If animals could talk we would now what there names were.
If animals could talk we could be great friends, we could know lots of things that we could not describe.
We would know all their secrets that even years of research could not crack.

So.....If animals could talk.....things would be very very VERY different...........
